Dhaka University vice-chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman on Saturday called upon the country’s mathematicians to present mathematics in a more attractive and easy way to the students.
He made this call while attending an award-giving ceremony of senior mathematicians as the chief organised at AF Mujibur Rahman Ganit Bhaban on the occasion of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh Mathematics Society (BMS) on Saturday.
President of Bangladesh Mathematics Society professor Shahidul Islam presided over the event while Dhaka University pro-vice-chancellor (Education) professor ASM Maksud Kamal, Treasurer professor Mumtaz Uddin Ahmed and Dean of Science Faculty professor Abdus Samad spoke as special guests.
Besides, Bangladesh Mathematics Society general secretary professor Mohammad Babul Hasan conducted the programme.
DU vice-chancellor professor Md Akhtaruzzaman referred to mathematics as the ‘mother’ of all sciences and said that it was not possible to achieve excellence in science education without the development of mathematics education. To strengthen the foundation of mathematics, he emphasised the appointment of skilled and quality mathematics teachers at the primary, secondary and higher secondary levels.
Pro-vice-chancellor (Education) professor ASM Maksud Kamal mentioned that the application of mathematics in all fields, including politics, social policy, economics and logic, was obvious.
There is no branch where mathematics is not applied, he added.
He, however, presented financial prizes and crests on behalf of the Bangladesh Mathematics Society to the 1st and 2nd prize winners in the international mathematics competition.
Besides, professor Saleh Matin, M Shamser Ali, professor Harun-Or Rashid, professor Sheikh Sohrab Uddin and professor Subrata Majumder reminisced about the mathematicians at the programme.
Later, the BMS awarded 64 senior mathematicians while mathematician Amulya Chandra Mandal announced their names.
