Mezbahuddin Ahmed, the fastest man of Bangladesh, was eliminated from the preliminary stage of the 100-metre sprint event of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after finishing fourth out of seven participants in the respective heat on Saturday. Mezbah, who clocked 11.34 seconds, ended at 14th place among 21 athletes in the preliminary stage. The 21-year-old sprinter failed to put his best timing of 10.72second behind and even if he could have clocked 10.76s he would qualify for round-1.
It was the worst ever timing for a Bangladeshi sprinter since 2004 Athens Olympics as Mohan Khan clocked 11.25second in the last edition in London while Abu Abdullah and Mohammad Shamsuddin clocked 11.07 and 11.13 in the Beijing 2008 and Athens 2004 respectively.
On the same day golfer Siddikur Rahman spent another frustrating day in the Olympic Games as he played four-over-par-75 in the third round at the Olympics Golf Course.
He was occupying 55th place when this report was filed with third round still remaining incomplete.
The 31-year-old two-time Asian Tour champion, who started the third round on 46th position, failed to earn a single birdie in the third round against four bogeys.
Siddik started the game with a bogey in the first hole and earned another three bogeys in the next nine holes.
Meanwhile on Friday, swimmer Sonia Akter Tumpa saw the exit door after she was eliminated from the heat of the women’s 50m freestyle event.
Sonia clocked 29.99second which was her career best but was not enough for the semi-final as the women from Jhinaidah became 69th out of 88 participants.
