Microbus drivers and their assistants blocked several roads in the Sylhet city for one hour on Thursday in protest at extortion. Local sources said Shah Jamal, an assistant subinspector of Dakkhin Surma police, allegedly tried to realise extortion from a microbus driver Hushiar Ali in the morning at Chandirpul Point. At one point of altercation with the police officer, Hushiar Ali informed a microbus workers’ union leader over the matter over mobile phone.
The union leaders and employees put barricades on the roads at Chandirpul, Humayun Rashid Square and Mendibag in the city through placing vehicles haphazardly on the roads to protest at the incident at around 11:00am, local sources said.
The district unit of transport workers’ union executive member told New Age that they agreed to withdraw the barricades from roads at noon after the police officers assured them of looking into the allegation of extortion.
When contacted, Dakkhin Surma police officer-in-charge Ranjan Samanta also admitted to the incident and said the transport workers had blocked the roads over checking vehicle documents by a police officer.
