The cost of migration for each Malaysia bound worker has further dropped under the government to government arrangements, officials said Wednesday.
Henceforth, each worker has to pay Tk28,500 as migration cost, down from existing Tk33,500, Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training officials told New Age.
They said that the cost came down as Biman agreed to carry the Malaysia bound workers charging lower fares from this month.
They said that the lower air fares were settled with Biman through negotiations.
BMET officials said that 1,221 Bangladeshi workers, out of 10,000 selected, had left to work at Malaysian plantations under the newly introduced G2G arrangements.
At least 34 others selected expressed their reluctance to work in Malaysia in the last moment, they said.
Earlier, Malaysia had conveyed its interest
in recruiting 10,000 workers for its plantations from Bangladesh through the G2G arrangements.
The two countries worked out the government to government recruitment arrangements under a memorandum of understanding they signed on November 26, 2012.
The MoU had set the migration cost for each worker at Tk 40,000, BMET officials said.
The cost was later lowered to Tk 33,500 after the Malaysian Airlines agreed to
charge less in fares, they said.
About five lakh Bangladeshis are currently working in Malaysia, according to BMET.
