The finance minister AMA Muhith on Thursday proposed increasing tax on milk powder imports to 10 per cent from existing 5 per cent for encouraging the local dairy industry.
He also proposed to impose 60 per cent supplementary duty on imported potato chips in the budget for financial year 2013-14.Muhith also proposed further reduction in taxes on information technology-related products.
He said several steps had been taken during the past years to implement Digital Bangladesh, a political commitment of the present government.
The finance minister also proposed reducing taxes on optical fibres, server rack, digital cameras, web cameras and supplementary duty on local SIM card producers.
Muhith proposed to reduce import duty on optical fibres to 5 per cent from 12 per cent.
‘To ensure smooth supply of quality optical fibre to the users at a cheaper price, it is proposed that its import duty be reduced from 12 per cent to 5 per cent and that of its identified raw materials to 0 per cent from the existing 12-25 per cent,’ he said.
Muhith also proposed to reduce custom duty on server rack to 10 per cent from the existing 25 per cent and supplementary duty on digital cameras and web cameras to 10 per cent from existing 25 per cent.
To boost-up the telecom sector, Muhith also proposed to reduce supplementary duty on local SIM card producers to 20 per cent from the existing 30 per cent.
