Ministry rejects BTRC bid to appoint consultant
The posts and telecommunications ministry has turned down a proposal by the telecom regulator to appoint a consultant for overseeing cyber security of the country, said officials.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission sent the proposal three months back after commission’s designated officer for Bangladesh Cyber Security Incident Response Team (BD-CSIRT) had resigned from the job.
BTRC officials said since then the commission did not appoint any officer with full time responsibility of BD-CSIRT rather some officials were given additional responsibilities to look after the cyber security.
‘The officials have their own tasks to do and since cyber security is additional duty for them they cannot do much for that,’ a senior BTRC official told New Age.
He said following some controversial content uploading on social networking sites like Facebook and some blogs the cyber security had become the priority of the government.
‘We receive request from the law enforcement agencies regularly about different cyber security-related issues but because of manpower shortage it becomes hard for us to attain those properly,’ he said.
Earlier in October the parliamentary standing committee on the posts and telecommunications ministry asked the BTRC to come up with latest measures to prevent cyber crimes.
