Ayesha Siddiqua Minni who was sentenced to death by the lower court in September 2020 as ‘planner’ for murdering her husband Rifat Sharif in broad daylight in Barguna on June 26, 2019 appealed to the High Court on Sunday seeking expeditious hearing of her prayer for ad-interim bail.
Minni’s lawyer Jamiul Hoque Faisal made the prayer to the bench of justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and justice Biswajit Debnath.
The court officials told New Age that the hearing on Minni’s bail prayer might not be held within the next two weeks as the bench is scheduled to hear several hundred bail prayers of convicted people filed earlier.
Minni filed an appeal with the High Court on October 6, 2020 challenging the lower court’s verdict on September 30, 2020 that sentenced her to death as ‘planner’ for murdering her husband Rifat Sharif.
On November 4, 2020 another High Court bench accepted Minni’s appeal for hearing.
In May 2021, Minni petitioned the High Court seeking ad-interim bail although there is no practice of granting bail to a death-row convict.
On September 30, 2020, the Barguna district and sessions judge’s court sentenced six adults, including Minni, 22, to death, and later on October 27, the juvenile court in the district ordered detention of six juvenile accused for 10 years, four for 5 years and one for 3 years after finding them guilty in Rifat Sharif murder case.
Rifat was hacked to death in front of Barguna Govt College with his wife Minni resisting the murderers all alone.
Rifat’s father Abdul Halim Dulal Sharif on June 27, 2019 filed a murder case against 12 people mentioning Minni as an eyewitness in the case.
On September 1, 2019, investigation officer Humayun Kabir, also Barguna sadar police inspector, filed two charge sheets with the Barguna senior judicial magistrate’s court in the case — one naming 10 adults aged above 18, including Minni, and the other against 14 juveniles aged below 18.
