A mobile court fined an auto-rickshaw driver for harassing a woman at Nabinagar in Brahmanbaria on the second day of mobile court operation across the country on Friday.
The Nabinagar upazila nirbahi officer, Shamsul Islam Mehedi, in a drive at Nabinagar sadar bus stand in the town fined the driver, Abdus Sattar, Tk 5,000 after the court found him harassing a woman, according to the news agency bdnews24.com.
Shamsul said they had conducted the driver after a teacher had informed the administration of such happening in the place.
Incidents of harassment of girls and women have increased in recent times.
A teacher in Natore and a guardian at Faridpur were killed by stalkers after they had protested at such harassment. A girl student also committed suicide after she had been picked up by a stalker in Sirajganj.
The government on Wednesday set rolling mobile court drivers across the country against harassment of girls and women.
Mobile courts the next day sentenced eight people to varying terms in prison in Comilla, Gopalganj and Jhenaidah on charges of harassing women.
Various organisations, meanwhile on the day, formed human chains in the capital to drum up support for a social movement against stalking.
The central unit of Bangabandhu Shishu Kishor Mela and the Friends’ Action for Better Movement formed human chains at the National Press Club in the morning against stalking.
They formed the human chains giving out a call for a social movement against harassment of girls.
Activists of the Friends’ Action for Better Environment later formed a human chain at the same place.
They termed harassment of girls a heinous crime and put out a call for the people to stand united against stalking.
