The very severe cyclone Mocha has started crossing Cox’s Bazar-north Myanmar coast and is likely to move north-northeasterly direction further and complete crossing Cox’s Bazar-North Myanmar coast near Sittwe of Myanmar by afternoon or evening on Sunday, according to the latest bulletin of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Sunday morning.
The maximum sustained wind speed within 74 km of the very severe cyclone centre is about 195 kph rising to 215 kph in gusts or squalls, said the bulletin.
The cyclonic over east central bay and adjoining area moved north-northeastwards, intensified over northeast bay and adjoining area and was centred at 6:00am on Sunday about 385 km south-southwest of Chattogram port, 305 km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 450 km south of Mongla port and 370 km south of Payra port.
Sea will remain very high near the storm centre.

Maritime ports of Chattogram and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted great danger signal number eight,’ read the bulletin.
It said, ‘Maritime ports of Mongla has been advised to keep hoisted local warning signal number four.’
‘The coastal district of Cox’s Bazar and its offshore islands and chars will come under great danger signal number 10,’ the bulletin said.
According to BMD, the coastal districts of Chattogram, Feni, Noakhali, Laxmlpur, Chandpur, Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur, Borguna and their offshore islands and chars will come under great danger signal number eight.
Riverports of the districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Feni, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur and Borguna have been advised to hoist riverine great danger signal number four, the bulletin said.
‘Under the peripheral effect of very severe cyclone and steep pressure gradient, the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Cox’s bazar and Chattogram and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by the wind driven surge height of eight to 12 feet above normal astronomical tide,’ the BMD said.
‘Under the peripheral effect of very severe cyclone and steep pressure gradient, the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Feni, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Bhola and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by the wind driven surge height of five to seven feet above normal astronomical tide,’ it said.
The bulletin said that Chattogram, Sylhet and Barishal divisions were likely to be experienced of the heavy to very heavy rainfall under the effect of very severe cyclone.
It said that landslide might occur at places over the hilly regions of Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachari and Chattogram due to very heavy rainfall.
All fishing boats and trawlers over north bay have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice, the bulletin said.
