The thirteen-day theatre festival, arranged by theatre troupe Mohakal Natya Sampraday, will end today.
Two local troupes and an Indian troupe will stage plays at three different venues. Theatre troupe Dhaka Theatre will stage Dhaboman at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and Udichi will stage Half Akhrai at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA; the Indian troupe Natyabhumi will stage Moneybag at the Chhayanaut Auditorium.
Dhaka Theatre’s Dhaboman is written by late iconic playwright Selim Al Deen, and is directed by Shimul Yousuf. The play revolves around a buffalo named Sohrab as the protagonist, the play set in the ambiance of a village by the river Someshwari in Netrakona. The play focuses on the indigenous traditions, folk-tales and art forms of Garo community.
Udichi’s Half Akhrai is written by Ratan Siddiqui, and directed by Azad Abul Kalam. The play features the age-old debate on the concept of art— whether art is for art’s sake or for life. The play is based on a historical clash between a conservative guru and disciple.
The guru and the disciple, in the play, stand for colliding political ideology and view of art.
Natyabhumi’s play Moneybag is written by Pracheta Gupta and directed by Sanjay Kar.
Before staging Dhaka Theatre’s Dhaboman at the National Theatre Hall, a concluding programme will be held as a closure to the thirteen-day
theatre festival. Liaquat Ali Lucky, director general of BSA and president of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation, will be present as the chief guest. Theatre personalities Lucky Enam, Mannan Hira and Hasan Arif will be present at the programme as special guests.
