The Chittagong mayor, ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, arrested by the joint forces on March 7, 2007 and released on bail on October 28 last, resumed office on Sunday.
Ward commissioners, officials and employees of the city corporation received the mayor with bouquet when he reached the office in the morning after one year and nine months.
Mohiuddin told newsmen after resuming office that a significant number of development projects remained stalled during his absence and that he would take necessary measures to implement them properly.
‘The government had arrested me and barred from resuming office after being released as they are against the development of port city,’ the mayor said, adding that he would devote himself to the development of the city to his last.
Answering a query, Mohiuddin said he has initiated campaign on behalf of the candidates nominated by the Awami League-led alliance for the upcoming general elections scheduled for December 29 soon after reaching the city.
‘We are optimistic about winning most of the four constituencies in the city,’ he added.
Mohiuddin opted to join his office soon after the release but the ministry of local government barred him, saying that he cannot discharge duties as the court had granted him bail for treatment abroad.
The mayor filed a writ petition with the High Court in this regard and the court stayed the ministry order for three months recently and asked the ministry to show cause as to why the order would not be declared illegal.
