Mominul Haque is simply tired of thinking about his chances in the Bangladesh one-day set-up and decided to focus on his play rather than wasting time to think about it.
Mominul, arguably the best Test batsman of Bangladesh for his sound technique and solid temperament, looked to be irked trying to analyse where he went wrong that forced team-management to lose confidence over his ability in the shorter format.
The left-hander was excluded from the ODI squad after the ICC World Cup and never had any further opportunity in the limited-over cricket though he showed substantial change in his batting approach recently.
Mominul was determined to come up with a transformed approach in the Dhaka Premier League and his change was quite visible trying to fit as an attacking batsman.
Mominul scored 671 runs in 16 matches of DPL and averaged 41.93 with the help of a century and seven fifties and more astonishingly with a strike rate of 95.99.
‘I am not disappointed [for being ignored],’ Mominul told New Age on Saturday regarding his failure to earn a spot in the 20-member Bangladesh squad for the ODI series against Afghanistan and England.
‘I assumed it won’t happen this time around so there is no use of losing sleep over it.’
Although Mominul feared that he might not be picked despite his good performance in the domestic league, he was unsure where his lacking was.
Above all, he is bored with the questions regarding his future in shorter form of the game.
‘I played a lot of shots in the DPL and increased my range of shots, yet I am not clear where my lacking is to fulfill the requirement as a limited-over cricketer’, he said.
‘It is tiring for me to answer the same question over and again [about how do I look at my ODI career].’
Although the young batsman was upset about not getting chance in the shorter versions but he said he was keeping his focus to do well in Tests.
According to insiders, Mominul does not fit in the ODI requirement due to recent change of approach adopted by the Tigers in the 50-over format that seemed to be successful.
Team management opted to overlook him because despite all his ability they are yet not convinced whether he will be fit to keep up the momentum that ensures a healthy run-rate.
Batsman Mahmudullah and Sabbir Rahman are believed to be better equipped to do the job as they are natural stroke makers and won’t hesitate to go after the bowlers from the beginning.
Chief selector Minhajul Abedin said that Mominul is very much in their ODI plans but at present could not be included because of the team philosophy.
‘We cannot include him now because we are heading towards a goal where he does not seem to be fit. But it does not imply he does not have any chance because we formulate our squads with different approach against different oppositions,’ said Minhajul.
