Participating artistes of a dance training project titled Dhrumel, have put up an attractive cultural show, featuring different forms of traditional Monipuri dance. The event was jointly organised by Monipuri community organisations, Sadhana and the Monipuri Theatre at Madhabpur Monipuri Lalitakala Academy auditorium at Kamalganj upazila in Moulvibazar on Friday night. The cultural show marked the founding anniversary of the organisation.
Dhrumel is a three year long project on dance training which is being conducted at Kamalganj upazila in Moulvibazar district under the supervision of Lubna Marium, chief of Sadhana and Subhasish Singha, chief executive of the Monipuri Theatre.The project was undertaken with a view to expand ‘sub-continental culture’.
The show started with presentation of nortansari dance, which is a traditional dance form of the Monipuri community. The nortansari number was led by Juti Sinha and directed by Sweetie Das Chowdhury.
Another talked about performance was the traditional ‘khuba-khushi’ dance, which was performed by the elder artistes of the Monipuri community. This number was choreographed by Bidhan Chandra Singha and Krishna Kumari Sinha.
Fung-Cholom, a traditional instrument of the community, was played by local artistes of Kamalganj Monipuri community and expert artistes who came from India. This part of the show turned out to be the most entertaining one to the houseful audience. Brojendra Singha, the eminent fung-cholom player of India directed this segment of the show.
Suniti Sinha and Sharmili Sinha played music for the dance numbers.
Earlier on the day, the 46th stage show of Monipuri drama Kohe Beerangana was held at the Monipuri Natmandap at Madhabpur.
Sandip Chakrabarty, the deputy high commissioner of India was the chief guest at the event. Former Member of Parliament M Naser Rahman, deputy commissioner of Moulvibazar Md Qumrul Islam, and superintendent of police Tofayel Ahmed were also present at the cultural show.
