BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain on Tuesday hinted that the party would not join the first parliament session on January 25 saying on that day multi-party democracy had been destroyed through introducing BAKSAL a one-party rule system during Awami League tenure in 1975.
“As Awami League government on January 25, 1975, destroyed multi-party democracy by introducing BAKSAL, BNP is unlikely to join the first session of the 9th parliament. How has Awami League, the party which had introduced BAKSAL on that day, chosen the same day for inaugural session of the 9th parliament? Due to this reason, BNP might not take part in the first session of the parliament,” Khandaker Delwar Hossain told reporters at BNP’s Central party office at Paltan in the capital yesterday.
He made the statement after an executive working committee meeting marking 73rd birth anniversary of BNP’s founder late President Ziaur Rahman. The meeting has chalked out a week-long elaborate programme to observe the day in a befitting manner.
Khandaker Delwar Hossain said soon after election results, tense situation has started prevailing throughout the country. “Crime incidents like murdering, hijacking, looting, manhandling and setting fire by Awami League leaders and activists are taking places across the country every day under the very nose of law enforcing agencies. But instead of maintaining law and order, ministry of home affairs and concerned authorities are playing a silent role. Despite these sorts of repression, oppressions and misbehaviour by the ruling party men, BNP still wants to cooperate with the government and join the parliament session for restoring democracy, ensuring peace and stability in the country and making the parliament functional. If the ruling party does not ask its leaders and activists to refrain from such barbaric activities BNP workers along with common people will give befitting reply to the Awami League-led grand alliance,” BNP Secretary General said.
“Whether BNP will be outside or inside during the parliament session, will depend on ruling party’s attitude. I am afraid Awami League led grand alliance would compel us to boycott the parliament,” Delwar said.
Khandaker Delwar Hossain alleged Awami League started its journey with a call for change but it has begun its activities through launching attacks on BNP leaders and activists. “People don’t want to witness such type of change which kills and assaults our leaders and activists. Please stop your (government) such type of change,” he added.
Replying to a query about the election result of Noakhali-1 constituency, Delwar said as the government failed in vote rigging and election engineering, BNP candidate won the poll. “If December 29 national parliament elections had been held in free and fair like Noakhali-1 constituency, BNP would go to power,” BNP Secretary General said.
Meanwhile, BNP MPs-elect on Tuesday decided to take oath tomorrow (Thursday). According to party insiders, BNP Chairperson’s Personal Staff Shimul Biswas in a letter addressed to the Speaker, apprised party’s decision for taking oath on January 15.
