Mohammedan Sporting Club clinched the title of the Metropolitan Women’s Cricket League for the fourth time in a row when they edged arch-rivals Abahani Ltd by 77 runs at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Saturday. Rumana Ahmed scored a century to steer Mohammedan to 204-7 in their stipulated 40 overs before three wickets each by Salma Khatun and Eti Mondal helped them restrict Abahani to 127-7.
Player of the match Rumana struck 100 off 91 balls, a rare century in women’s cricket which included 15 fours. The second highest 35 came from extras largely owing to 26 wide balls bowled by Abahani bowlers.
Abahani were all but out of the match once opener Montaha Khatun consumed 52 balls to score 15 with the first 10 overs fetching them just 27 runs. Lota Mondal scored 54 from 78 balls to provide some late sparkle but it was certainly not enough.
The innings, however, took Lata’s tally to 311 runs in the league which, coupled with 18 wickets, helped her win the player of the tournament award.
Mohammedan had also won the tournament in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013. They were runners-up behind Ansar and VDP in 2010.
