Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim didn’t have any problems regarding the issue of splitting the captaincy in all formats of the game in the coming days if that serves the best interest of the national cricket team. Mushfiq along with his team-mates returned on Saturday after their disastrous tour of West Indies where they lost both the ODI and Test series without any win under their belt.
The question was recently raised by the Bangladesh Cricket Board after observing the debacle of the Bangladesh national cricket team for the last nine months.
And the Tigers’ agonising showings in the Caribbean have spiced up the captaincy issue rather than anything else as many cricket pundits of the country as well as the BCB high-ups blamed the captain for his unrealistic approach.
‘I am up for it,’ Mushfiq told reporters at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, when the topic was raised after the team’s arrival on Saturday.
‘If they think it will be good for the team, then why not? Whether I am a captain or not there will always be pressure if you are playing for the Bangladesh team. So, on that aspect the decision is theirs to take,’ said Mushfiq.
His captaincy was extended till the ICC World Cup 2015 after he repeatedly urged the BCB to appoint a captain for long term.
Mushfiq, who earlier resigned as the captain in the middle of the series in Zimbabwe, looked motivated to bring some joy in the Tiger’s dressing as like the good old days, if he was given the chance.
‘This [captaincy issue] does not depend on me. I said this before as well. It’s very difficult to get out of a bad patch,’ said Mushfiq.
‘The challenge is to get back to the good old days and hopefully those days will return. I am not the one who can take a decision on it. Those who gave me the responsibility will take it. They can say best on this matter and they can do whatever is good for the team’, said Mushfiq.
Meanwhile, Mushfiq blamed their inconsistency for the team’s failure in the Caribbean.
‘Off the field I don’t think that there was something missing. Inside the field the result that we needed, did not happen in the ODIs. The way we started the first match, unfortunately we could not continue the rhythm.
‘And in the other two ODIs we could not bat up to our expectations while chasing. The same thing happened during the Test series.
‘In the entire series the thing that we learnt the most, is that we weren’t consistent enough. This is very difficult. When you want to win against a strong team, you need to play with patience and caution. We lacked in this aspect. Hopefully next time we can hold on to advantageous positions.’ said Mushfiq.
The captain also indicated that the team combination needed some changes for the betterment of the team.
‘We don’t need any massive changes. Since the team is not getting any results, we need a proper combination to fix up the things.
‘We tried a few different strategies against West Indies but those weren’t successful. We hope that the team will return to form soon with the series against Zimbabwe,’ added Mushfiq.
