Bangladesh’s veteran wicketkeeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim has announced his retirement from T20 Internationals. The announcement came from its official Facebook page on Sunday afternoon.
Mushfiqur’s Facebook post read: “As salaa mualaikum to all, hope you are doing well. “I have been grateful to have you all beside me throughout my long career. Your support has been my inspiration during my highs and lows. “Today, I am announcing my retirement from T20 Internationals. I will proudly continue to represent Bangladesh in Test and ODI formats. I am hopeful that I can bring success for our nation in these two formats. “I will continue to take part in Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and other franchise tournaments. Alhamdulillah. Thank you all. Allah Hafez.”
The 35-year-old was heavily criticized at the 2022 Asian Cup where he failed to perform with the bat and wasn’t very effective behind the stumps either. He scored five runs in two games and was guilty of putting down Kusal Mendis first up in the second game against Sri Lanka. He also did not try to convince skipper Shakib Al Hasan of a nick Mendis had made later on in the game, which Bangladesh lost by two wickets to be eliminated from the competition.
Mushfiqur amassed 1500 runs over his 17-year career, scoring them in 102 games at an average of 19.48 and a strike rate of 115.03. He has six 50s in the format to his name.
However, Mushfiqur stated in the statement that he will continue to play for Bangladesh in Tests and ODIs. According to the post, he will also participate in domestic and franchise T20 matches.
