Mustafizur Rahman and Mehedi Hasan shared six wickets between them as Bangladesh restricted Australia to 377-9 in the rain-hit third day of the second Test in Chittagong on Wednesday. Resuming on 225-2 after rain washed out the entire opening session of the third day, the visitors clawed past Bangladesh’s first innings total 305 runs before taking their lead to 72 runs when bad light stopped play.
Warner made an uncharacteristic 123 off 234 balls, his second century in successive innings before he was dismissed by his Sunrisers Hyderabad team-mate Mustafiz.
Imrul Kayes took the catch at leg-gully after several fumbles as Warner left after hitting just seven boundaries in the innings, the least in any of his previous 19 Test centuries.
Warner, who was unbeaten on 88 overnight, received a great support from Peter Handscomb as the duo shared 152-run for the third wicket stand to put Australia in control.
Handscomb made 82 off 144 balls with six boundaries before he was run out by a throw of Shakib Al Hasan from midwicket.
Handscomb responded to a call for a single that would complete Warner’s century but was sent back by the latter from the middle of the pitch at a time when it was difficult for him to return.
Bangladesh, were denied by further success as Mehedi Hasan dropped Glenn Maxwell on 10 at gully off Mustafiz.
Mehedi then put down Hilton Cartwright off his own bowling on six before making amendments when he had the same batsman caught at slip by Soumya Sarkar for 18 on the stroke on tea.
Mehedi removed Maxwell (38) and Pat Cummins (four) after the break before Sakib al Hasan bowled Ashton Agar for his only wicket in the day.
Agar was dropped by Soumya at slip but it did not cost Bangladesh much as Sakib broke through his defense five balls later.
Mehedi finished the day with 3-93 while birthday boy Mustafiz claimed 3-84 so far.
