Dhaka Nagar Paribahan buses will soon introduce 225 buses on three new routes while private company Trans Silva will add 20 more buses in the first experimental route Ghatarchar to Kanchpur via Motijheel and Signboard.
Bus Route Rationalisation Committee president and Dhaka south city mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said that they fixed the proposed routes in the previous meeting, said a press release.
The three new routes are Ghatarchar to Demra Staff Quarter via Farmgate (route 22), Ghatarchar to Chittagong Road via Bashila (route 23), and Ghatarchar to Postagola-Kadamtali via Asadgate (route 26), according to the release.
The route 22 will get 50 buses, route 23 will get 100 buses and route 26 to get 75 buses and a total of 225 buses will ply the routes, Taposh added.
The mayor, while exchanging views with reporters following the 22nd meeting of the Bus Route Rationalisation Committee at Buriganga Hall of Nagar Bhaban on Tuesday, also said that people praised their initiative as they did not need to pay extra money.
He said that the three routes would begin taking experience from the first one.
‘People are very glad having the initiative as they were not charged extra,’ Taposh said, adding that now people can get down from buses at designated points.
He said that the initiative would be implemented completely when they can direct ‘Dhaka Nagar Paribahan Company’ in all routes.
Taposh also said that the DSCC and the Dhaka North City Corporation would take initiative to construct four inter-district bus terminals along with bus terminal and depot at Ghatarchar.
Dhaka north city mayor Atiqul Islam said that 62 per cent people in Dhaka depend on bus service according to survey.
‘If bus service can conduct properly, it will bring a big change in traffic system,’ said Atiqul.
He said that they were looking for improving public transports quality and its services by reducing the private cars.
Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation chairman Md Tajul Islam, Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority’s executive director Neelima Akhter and DSCC chief executive officer Farid Ahmed, among others, were present at the meeting.
Under the franchise-based system of the route rationalisation project, initiated by the former Dhaka north city mayor Annisul Huq seven years ago, the buses began plying between Ghatarchar and Kanchpur via Motijheel and Signboard on December 26, 2021.
