Former national captain Naimur Rahman was left to face a battle to retain his position as Bangladesh Cricket Board director after six councillors brought nomination papers on Friday to contest for two positions from the Dhaka Division in the upcoming elections. Apart from Manikganj councillor Naimur, councillor of Gapalganj district Sheikh Fazle Naim, councillor of Narsinghdi Shahinur Islam, councillor of Munshiganj district Junate Hossain, councillor of Narayanganj district Tanvir Ahmed Titu and councillor of Kishoreganj district Syed Ashfaqul Islam also have brought nomination papers.
A total of 18 councillors will elect two directors for Dhaka Division in the elections, scheduled on October 31.
Naimur was included in the Nazmul Hasan-led panel on Friday but according to insiders it did not guarantee him a place in 26-member BCB board of directors.
Nazmul also included Gapalganj councillor Sheikh Fazle Naim, the son of former minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, but BCB sources said that others, especially Narayanganj councillor Tanvir Ahmed Titu, a close relative of local lawmaker Shamim Osman, were unlikely to give them a bye.
There could be election for the director of Barisal Division as two councillors – current director MA Awal Chowdhury and Barisal Divisional Sports Association representative Alamgir Khan brought nomination papers for one post.
The last date of withdrawal of nomination papers is October 29.
Former captain Khaled Mahmud is the only one so far set to be elected unopposed from category-3 reserved for former captains and miscellaneous organisations as no other candidate took nomination paper from this group.
No major change was expected in club category though 14 councillors, including BCB president Nazmul Hasan, brought nomination papers for 12 positions of directors.
At least two of candidates are expected to withdraw their nomination papers to pave the way for others to be elected unopposed.
They are expected to join the board as the nominees of National Sports Council.
Ahmed Iqbal Hasan, who has remained inactive for a long period, is the only current BCB director not to make the list of Nazmul Hasan-led panel. Manzur Kader, who was previously elected from category-1 reserved for district and divisional organisers, took his place.
Previously a NSC nominee, Ismail Haider Mallick is expected to replace late Nazmul Karim Tinku in club category and baring any dramatic development, Nazmul and Ahmed Sazzadul Alam are expected to withdraw their nominations to join the board as NSC nominee.
