A sedate century by Ian Bell helped England to earn a narrow 21-run lead on the first innings as the tourists notched up 440 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the first innings on the third day of the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Monday.
Earlier, Bangladesh piled up a fighting 419 in the first innings on the second day’s play.
England resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 171 for the loss of three wickets. Ian Bell and Jonathon Trott resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 64 and 25 runs respectively.
Trott failed to add any run in his previous account as he was clean bowled by Shakib Al Hasan. Shakib, the day’s most successful bowler, finished his yesterday’s spell as 57-27-99-4.
After dismissal of Trott, Ian Bell and Matt Prior put on together 98 runs in the fifth wicket stand before Prior was bowled by Shakib when England’s total was 272 for the loss of five wickets. Matt Prior scored 62 off 89 balls amid nine fours.
Ian Bell made a patient 138 off 262 balls. He cracked 15 fours and a sixer in his 319-minute innings. It was Bell’s 10th Test century in his career so far.
After elimination of Matt Prior, Ian Bell and Tim Bresnan repaired the damage adding together 143 runs for the sixth wicket stand before Bell was caught by Johgurul Islam off Shakib Al Hasan when England’s total was 415 for the loss of six wickets. Then, Graeme Swann arrived at the crease but unfortunately he was run out by Shakib Al Hasan for only six runs.
After removal of Swann, Stuart Broad arrived at the crease but his innings was short lived as he was trapped leg before wicket by Mahmudullah Riyad for just three runs.
Tim Bresnan remained unbeaten with 74 off 214 balls amid five shots through the fence. Bresnan fulfilled his half century playing 137 deliveries with three fours. James Tredwell was on nought before the two umpires picketed the bails for the third day.
