The two-day 33th national council session of the Bangladesh Girls Guides Association started in Barisal Wednesday morning with a call to prevent stalking.
The Barisal mayor, Shawkat Hossain Hiron, opened the programme by illuminating 33 lamps at Barisal Govt Girls School and participated in the anti-stalking human chain in front of the venue.
Fulrani Sarkar, national commissioner of the BGGA, presided over the ceremony addressed, among others, by Sangkar Kumar Paul, headmaster of the school, and Begum Faizun Nahar, regional commissioner of the BGGA.
Recitation from religious scriptures, playing of national and World Girls Guide anthems and presenting the chief guest with scarf, submitting annual report of the BGGA were parts of the inaugural ceremony of council session.
The mayor, avowing support to the Girls Guides movement, said cooperation from all walks of life, specially the women and girls, was needed to curb social problems like stalking.
Girl Guides could play a vital role in this regard through active participation in anti-stalking movement and building mass awareness of the issue, the BCC Mayor urged.
More than 120 councillors and executive body members of the BGGA national committee are participating in the programme.
