National Girl Child Day was observed on Monday throughout the country aiming to end propaganda against women empowerment and development in the country.
‘Advancement of women is not a barrier to religious ethics and rituals, rather helpful,’ was the theme of National Girl Child Day 2013.Different government, non-government organisations and educational institutions organised different programmes to celebrate the day.
Ministry of women and children affairs formed a human chain beginning at Shahbagh and ending on the Bangladesh Shishu Academy premises.
To celebrate the day, Bangladesh Shishu Academy organised discussion, essay competition, award ceremony and cultural programmes.
Addressing the programme, women and children affairs state minister Meher Afroze Chumki said though women are contributing to society equally, they are not yet taken care of like sons in most of the families.
She emphasised the need to stop child marriage in the country.
Chumki said a section of people have launched propaganda saying that adultery is increasing because women are participating in social, economic and political activities.
Earlier, women and children affairs ministry issued notice to different government institutions to participate in the rally of National Girl Child Day.
Bangladesh Bank organised a rally in front of Bangladesh Bank main office where the governor Atiur Rhaman, deputy governors Abul Kashem and Nazneen Sultana and other high officials were also present.
Jagannath University formed a human chain in front of the university gate where the university vice-chancellor Mizanur Rahman said for many years girl child have been neglected and deprived in their families and society.
He said if girl child would get adequate food, health service and social security, they would become human resource and would also be able to contribute to family and society.
National Girl Child Advocacy Forum brought out a procession from in front of the National Museum and it ended at Central Shaheed Minar.
In Bandarban, Directorate of Women Affairs formed a human chain in front of Bandarban Press Club and organised children gathering, hand writing competition, extempore speech and cultural programme at Bandarban Shishu Academy auditorium.
District Mahila Krira Sangstha president Laboni Islam and press club president Osman Gani were also present at the programme.
Directorate of Women Affairs also organised a rally in Mysensingh and Madaripur of the country to mark the day.
