The 5th National Games for the intellectually-challenged athletes, organised by the Special Olympics Bangladesh and sponsored by Grameenphone, will start today. This was announced at a press briefing on Thursday.
The meet is the result of a two-year long talent hunt programme arranged by Grameenphone in cooperation with the Special Olympics Bangladesh.
The opening ceremony of the games will be held at the Banani Army Stadium and the main completion will be held at the BKSP at Savar.
About 400 athletes from seven divisions of the country will be participating in the meet under the guidance of specially trained coaches of Special Olympics Bangladesh.
The National Games will be the platform for the athletes to win a right to represent Bangladesh at the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2011 in Athens, Greece.
In the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer
Games, Bangladesh squad comprising 47 athletes, performed exceptionally well and won a total of 71 medals.
The founder chairman of the Special Olympics Bangladesh, Ashraf-ud-Dowla, and head of market communication of Grameenphone Ltd Syed Tahmeed Azizul Huq were present at the press conference.
