Bangladesh Navy has agreed in principle to permanently appoint two chess players – Fide Masters Sheikh Nasir Ahmed and Khandoker Aminul Islam – after the duo helped them finish as runners-up in the recently-concluded premier league chess tournament.
The decision was announced when the chess team met Navy chief vice admiral M Farid Habib at his office on Wednesday.
The Navy chief congratulated the chess team for finishing second without any help from foreign players.
A press release from the Association of Chess Players-Bangladesh hailed the decision to make the appointments and said it was a historic moment for chess.
‘This will help chess going forward,’ the Association said in a statement.
