Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan was forced by the members of his ad-hoc committee to remain silent regarding several key issues concerning Bangladesh cricket, leading to strange scenes at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
Nazmul, who was a chief guest at the 5th Women’s Club Cricket Tournament final, was expected to answer a few questions from journalists, with momentum gathering for the BCB election following the announcement that former president Saber Hossain intended to run for the post.
Members of the print and electronic media were gathered at the DCS to avail of the opportunity to speak with the BCB boss about the long overdue board election, with the deadlock expected to break soon.
However, as soon as Nazmul finished awarding prizes to the members of the champion Mohammedan Sporting Club and runner-up Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, one of his aides literally dragged him to his car without even letting him turn towards the crowd.
‘We decided he won’t speak,’ Ismail Haider Mallick, an ad-hoc committee member and a close Nazmul aide, yelled towards journalists.
‘Whether the BCB president will talk or not can be decided by us [the ad-hoc committee],’ he continued, as Nazmul was guarded by his close friend Manzur Kader, the president of Sheikh Jamal.
Earlier this month, Nazmul took a swipe at former BCB president Saber Hossain and threatened to unmask him while speaking to the media upon his return from the ICC conference in London, creating shockwaves in the cricket fraternity.
Meanwhile, BCB lawyer Mohammad Mehedi Hasan confirmed to New Age on Wednesday that there is to be a Supreme Court hearing today regarding the legality of amendments to the BCB constitution.
The full bench of the Supreme Court Appellate Division is expected to hear arguments today after the Supreme Court stayed a High Court order that ruled that the changes made in the amended constitution were illegal.
‘There is expected to be a hearing tomorrow, but the chances of a verdict are slim,’ said Mehedi.
