Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan took steps to win the hearts of representatives of the Divisional and District Sports Associations, who will have a major say in the forthcoming election.
Nazmul called a meeting with DSA representatives at the National Cricket Academy building today to discuss the election, after a rift had clearly developed between the two parties in recent times.
The meeting was called days after Nazmul showed his reluctance to even recognize Forum, a representative group of district and divisional sports organisers. Nazmul castigated Forum for eyeing BCB directorship despite not having cricket leagues in their respective districts.
Forum leader Yousuf Zamil Babu openly challenged Nazmul on a private TV channel programme on Tuesday, which further demonstrated the decline in the relationship.
Yousuf claimed that Nazmul could not win an election against him, let alone former BCB president Saber Hossain Chowdhury, who is believed to be the main challenger to the incumbent BCB boss.
Chittagong-based organiser and BCB ad hoc committee member AZM Nasir, who is expected to play a crucial part in bridging the gap between the two parties, said the meeting was called to discuss the constitution and to seek Forum’s cooperation.
‘There has been a lot of discussion regarding the constitution in the media, so we want to brief them about it,’ Nasir told New Age.
‘It is not an attempt at a compromise but rather a meeting to help them understand the constitution, which we think was wrongly interpreted by a certain section to make it controversial,’ Nasir added.
Forum leaders could not be reached for comment.
