The Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan took a swipe at one his predecessors, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, and threatened to unmask people who put the country’s cricket into shambles.
Nazmul returned from the ICC annual conference on Sunday and vented his anger in front of the media at the Shahjalal International Airport regarding a remark Saber Hossain made about the Dhaka Premier League.
Saber had recently alleged that the ad-hoc committee is not willing to start the league unless the constitution formed by them is approved, which allows two councilors for each of the top six teams in the next election.
‘This is all rubbish talk,’ Nazmul told reporters at the airport, ‘I am not aware of what he had said, but even earlier I came to know about some of his remarks that do not make any sense.’
‘I had explained specifically why the league is delayed. Saber has little concern about the match-fixing issue, but is rather interested about the election,’ he said of his fellow parliament member, who is believed to be his main challenger in the BCB.
‘But, for me, the election is not the most important thing, rather making cricket free from all corruption is a priority,’ said Nazmul, adding that he will soon unmask all individuals and what they did when they were Chairs.
‘No one will be spared. In due time all the names will come to light,’ said an exasperated BCB president. ‘I was extremely hurt when I came to know about what was going on in BCB. I was new once, but as time went by everything became clear to me,’ he said.
‘If they attack us through the media we won’t stay quiet for long. I am waiting for the information.’
‘Whether I stay for one month or two is not important, rather putting cricket on the right track is what I am thinking about,’ he said.
Nazmul said that he expected to get a letter from the ICC regarding their recommendation about the constitution and once he gets it he will make an announcement.
The ad-hoc committee failed to hold the election
due to a court ruling after a case was filed by the opposition panel of Nazmul, said to be working hand-in-hand with Saber.
‘I would like to declare the election by next month,’ said Nazmul ‘I am expecting to get a letter from the ICC as they have some observations about the constitution approved by the NSC.’
Nazmul also backtracked from his earlier stance about the league, which he was reluctant to start until receiving the ICC Anti-Corruption and Security Unit report on the ongoing match-fixing scandal.
However, as the report is unlikely before August, he is keen to start the league now.
‘There is no problem to start the league now. Since it will take at least one month to get the ACSU report there is no point in delaying the league,’ said Nazmul.
