In an effort to uphold the musical legacy of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, Bangladesh Nazrul Sangeet Sangstha (BNSS), a newly-formed organisation, emerged in the scene on Friday, through arranging a two-day cultural congregation.
Renowned Nazrul artistes of the country took part in the programme.
Titled Nazrul Shammelan 2011, the event, which featured discussion, dance rendition and musical soiree based on Nazrul’s works, wrapped up yesterday at the Main Hall of Bangladesh National Museum in the city.
On the opening day, the congregation began with the welcome speech of Khairul Anam Shakil, general secretary of BNSS.
The discussion was also attended, among others, by Nazrul exponent Dr Rafiqul Islam, Sudhin Das, adviser of the organisation; Khalid Hossain, its chairman and Khilkhil Kazi, poet’s grand-daughter.
The speakers, at the discussion, gave the reasons for forming BNSS, an umbrella organisation for the Nazrul artistes of the country.
On the occasion, Dr Rafiqul Islam delivered the key-note speech on the life and works of the National Poet.
The discussion was followed by a cultural programme in which artistes of the organisation rendered four Nazrul songs including Nomo nomo nomo Bangladesh momo, Ei amader Bangladesh, Karo bhorosha korish ne tui and Shonka shunyo lokkho konthe.
The cultural event also showcased recitation from Nazrul’s poems of rebellion, nature and love in his poems; dance performances on Nazrul numbers and solo musical soiree.
The inaugural day’s programme concluded with the rendition of a group dance performance by the child artistes of the organisation.
A similar kind of event was arranged yesterday to wrap up the congregation.
Leading Nazrul singers including Khairul Anam Shakil, Khilkhil Kazi, Salauddin Ahmed, Shaheen Samad, Ferdous Ara, Nasima Shaheen, Fatema Tuz Zohra, Yakub Ali Khan, Joseph Kamol Rodericks, Dr Leena Tapashi Khan, Kalpona Anam, Selina Hossain and Sharmin Sathi, among others, rendered solo songs from Nazrul’s timeless compositions during the event.
BNSS, a platform for the Nazrul artistes of the country, was initiated early this year with a view to achieving its six-point aim that included giving priority to keeping Nazrul’s compositions and lyrics intact, taking necessary steps in generating awareness in this regard, giving emphasis on emerging artistes and arranging programmes in order to generate interest in Nazrul’s works.
The organisation consists of 50 general members.
