Durgom Giri Kantar Moru, a song well known for its unyielding lyrics and powerful composition, exerted a commendable sway over the audience when it was powerfully presented in a chorus at the auditorium of National Museum in the capital on Friday evening.
The song reflected its creator Kazi Nazrul Islam’s indomitable spirit, upholding humanity and justice. The lyrics of the song have a unique pictorial and inspirational quality. The song can invoke perilous images and the courage to overcome obstacles in the same stanza.
Along with Durgom Giri, some other timeless Nazrul numbers were also presented in chorus and solo recitals at the programme on the first day of the two-day programme titled Nazrul Sammilan 2014, organised by Bangladesh Nazrul Sangeet Shilpy Sangstha to celebrate the poet’s 115th birth anniversary, which fell on May 25.
Sons like Doley Jhulon Dolay and Nabin Asha Jagalo Je Re Aaj were also presented in chorus at the programme.
Singers Khairul Anam Shakil , Sujon Rahman, Kawsar Begum Nishi, Suraiya Alam, Rezwanul Haque, Poly Guho, and others presented in solo more songs of Nazrul like Ashilo Phirey, Elo Krishna Kanaiya, Pubali Pabane Banshi, Esho Hey Sajal Shyamo Ghana Deya, Nohe Nohe Priyo and others.
The programme also included recitation of Nazrul’s poem Agomoni by noted recitation artiste Dahlia Ahmed.
Earlier in the day, a discussion session was held where Khalid Hossain, president of the Sangstha, who is also a noted singer, delivered a speech on the life and works of Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Khairul Anam Shakil, general secretary of the Sangstha, delivered a welcome speech at the programme that saw a full-hall audience.
