Internal Resource Division of the finance ministry on Thursday suspended the National Board of Revenue commissioner Hafizur Rahman on corruption charges and for not joining at office on time after expiry of his study leave. IRD on Wednesday issued an official order in this regard, officials of the revenue board said. They said that two separate inquiry committees of the NBR found evidences of graft allegations and accumulation of wealth illegally against Hafizur, who is now staying abroad on study leave.
According to the committee report, Hafizur accumulated huge wealth including cash money in different bank accounts illegally beyond his known source of income and operated different businesses during his tenure as commissioner of customs bond commissionerate.
He went to UK in 2012 and did not return from abroad after expiry of his study leave.
Anit-Corruption Commission is also conducting an inquiry against
Hafizur for accumulation of illegal wealth beyond his known source of income.
According to the ACC findings, Hafizur deposited huge amount of money in at least 14 bank accounts in different banks.
NBR officials said that government would continue the inquiry against him to take punitive action.
