The National Board of Revenue started to have access to electoral database of the Election Commission from Monday to verify the identity of the persons
interested to get services from the tax regulator.
A news release of the commission said the NBR would have the access to the central database to get the personal information of a voter in line with a memorandum of understanding signed between the NBR and the commission on January 24, 2012.
Information about 9.22 crore voters are now currently preserved in the central database prepared by the EC.
According to the National Identity Registration Act 2010, different government agencies will need to publish circular making compulsory the provision of submitting the national ID card to get any civic facilities like getting passport, cell phone’s subscriber identity module and removable user identity module RUIM and bank accounts.
The EC is empowered by the section 6 of the law to prepare the national ID rules or guidelines and to preserve the database so that the service-providing agencies can examine online whether the submitted national ID of a certain person is correct using the EC’s database to identify fake ID card holders.
The deal on the use of EC’s voter database will be effective for the next 10 years for which the NBR paid a total of Tk 25 lakh to the commission.
The NBR will henceforth take the data set of a person from the EC’s electoral database before issuing a tax identification number against the person in its bid to curb tax evasion and forgery more effectively.
The deal aims at facilitating online verification of some basic information provided in the national identity cards to prevent tax evasion and deception by ascertaining the authenticity of the information.
The EC had also signed similar deal with the Bangladesh Bank.
