Income Tax Day today
The National Board of Revenue has taken a set of actions to eliminate hassles in getting taxpayer’s identification number online or e-TIN, NBR officials said.
They said that they had included edit and validate options in the e-TIN registration and re-registration process as the taxpayers had been facing problems in the absence of those two features on the web site.
At the week-long income tax fair to be started on Monday at all the divisional cities, and the two-day fair at all the districts, the NBR will provide services related to e-TIN to the taxpayers along with receiving income tax returns.
At the fair, the revenue board will accept manually filled-up e-registration forms from the taxpayers those who would not be able to provide e-TINs while submitting income tax returns for the current fiscal year, they said.
Revenue officials will fill-up the registration form online and later provide e-TIN to the taxpayers, they added.
Taxpayers had been facing a lot of troubles while applying for e-TINs because of printing mistakes such as spelling errors in taxpayers’ names, parents’ names and errors in other information on the national identity cards.
Applications for e-TINs are being rejected due to mismatch of information preserved in the NID server with information provided by the taxpayers.
There is no option for correction of mistakes occurred during the e-TIN registration procedure.
The taxpayers are also facing problems in registering e-TINs as NID server of the Election Commission becomes down repeatedly.
The information provided by the taxpayers is cross checked with the NID server for providing e-TIN.
Now, the NID wing of the EC is upgrading its server to this end, officials said.
The NBR is going to include validate and edit options to solve the problems, they said.
They said that now the taxpayers would have to provide personal information as per the NID, even if any errors remain there, but they would be able to validate the inaccurate information later.
If an applicant makes any mistakes, the revenue officials will correct it after getting request from the applicant.
On July 1, the NBR started issuing TIN online through a dedicated website — www.incometax.gov.bd.
According to the NBR decision, new taxpayers will have to take 12-digit new TINs while existing TIN holders will have to get registered in the system to get new 12-digit ones by December 31 this year.
The existing TINs will be invalid from January 1, 2014.
An NBR official said that if any taxpayers could not provide e-TIN with income tax returns for the current fiscal year, they would have to submit a filled-up form provided by the NBR along with returns.
Otherwise, income tax returns will not be accepted, he said.
He said that taxmen of related circles would register the information provided by the taxpayers on the online system and later inform the taxpayers about his new e-TIN.
The re-registration form will be found at all booths at the fair venues and on NBR web site.
The government, meanwhile, will observe the National Income Tax today.
The NBR will bring out a colourful rally, headed by the finance minister AMA Muhith, in the city.
The revenue board will also award highest taxpayers for the financial years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012.
