A new bus service featuring ticket counters is set to launch in Dhaka on Thursday, February 6, with the goal of improving public transport, alleviating traffic congestion, and enhancing passenger safety. The service will officially kick off from Abdullahpur at 10:30 am.
This initiative, led by the Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association (DRTOA), will involve around 2,610 pink buses operated by 21 different companies, covering routes from Abdullahpur to various locations throughout the capital, as stated by Md Saiful Alam, the general secretary of DRTOA.
During a press briefing today, Saiful Alam explained that the new system will require passengers to buy tickets before boarding and will enforce strict rules regarding designated stops for getting on and off. He highlighted that this method aims to address the persistent problems associated with contract-based bus operations, which have led to unregulated competition, erratic driving, and a rise in road accidents.
The transport sector has faced increasing pressure to reform following a meeting in December with the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, where vehicle owners were directed to establish fixed-term contracts with drivers rather than relying on trip-based incentives. Saiful Alam noted that the introduction of the ticket counter system marks the first step toward creating a safer and more organized transport network.
The DRTOA has plans to expand the ticket counter operations to Mirpur, Gabtoli, and Mohammadpur by the end of this month. Ultimately, all buses in Dhaka are expected to implement this new system, providing a more unified and efficient transport service for commuters.
To prepare for this transition, bus drivers and assistants are currently receiving training to become familiar with the new ticketing procedures and to enhance passenger service standards. The DRTOA has also stressed the importance of courteous behavior from transport staff, aiming to foster a safer and more commuter-friendly transport environment.
