No examinations will be held to evaluate the pre-primary level students in the current 2023 academic year following the new national curriculum.
Class I students will be fully evaluated through continuous assessment while no marginal/annual examination will be held and no fees can be charged from the students or the guardians for the assessment process.
With these, the Directorate of Primary Education on Tuesday issued an eight-point directive on the assessment process for the government primary.
The government introduced the new national school curriculum to Classes I, VI and VII this year.
Students of Class II at primary level and of Classes VIII and IX at secondary level are scheduled to start their studies under the new curriculum in 2024 while it is to be finally adopted for Classes III, IV, V and X in 2025.
The primary and mass education ministry information and public relations officer Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman said that the directives were given to the government primary schools, but not to the non-government primary-level schools and educational institutes.
The ministry is trying to bring the non-government primary-level schools and educational institutions under the same umbrella, he added.
Currently, as per the Annual Primary School Census 2021, there are 1,18,891 primary-level educational institutions in Bangladesh, including 65,566 government primary schools and 53,325 private and non-government primary-level schools and educational institutions.
For the continuous and integrated assessments in classrooms, a directive, including all teachers’ guides, has already been uploaded to the website of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board.
Along with this, two work and PDF files were also uploaded with the names of Teacher’s Diary– 1 and Teacher’s Diary– 2 for conducting the assessment process and preserving information.
The head teachers or teachers of the primary schools can upload these files to operate the assessment process and send periodic reports on the students’ learning process.
Another directive also said that assessments of the students of Classes of II, III, IV and V would take place as per the system before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Before pandemic, periods and annual examinations were held to assess students in these classes.
According to the directives, the assessments of the students will have to be conducted in time as per the academic calendar, the concerned upazila/thana education officer will prepare routine, question papers must be prepared by the subject-based teachers under the supervision of assistant upazila/thana education officer and the question papers will have to be photocopied and the schools will bear the relevant expenses, including photocopies and answer papers.
The orders will be in effect until further notice.
Soon after the distribution of free textbooks, under the new curriculum, experts pointed out that the books for the secondary level contained incorrect information.
After about four months, the board gave corrections to the textbooks.
