Police are yet to make any headway in the case filed over the killing of photojournalist Aftab Ahmed. Aftab was found dead at his residence in the capital on Wednesday morning.
Inspector Nasim Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Rampura Police Station yesterday told The Independent that there was no progress in the investigation of the murder case as the police were extremely busy in handling the current political programmes of the opposition parties. He, however, claimed that a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has been trying to arrest the prime suspect in the murder case, filed by the deceased’s son, Monowar Ahmed Sagor.
On Thursday, Sagor filed the case against Aftab’s driver Humayun Kabir, the prime suspect, and some unnamed assailants. Driver Humayun remains absconding since the incident.
Police and victim’s family members suspect that the driver, appointed on December 1, may have murdered the journalist.
Aftab Ahmed, allegedly strangled to death on Tuesday night at his residence in West Rampura area of the capital, was living alone in the house. His son Monowar Ahmed lives in Jessore and his daughter Afroza Ahmed lives in Gazipur with her husband Faruk Ahmed.
Aftab, 79, joined as a photographer of the daily Ittefaq in 1962 and captured some images of the 1971 Liberation War and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He won Ekushey Padak in 2006, fiver years after his retirement from the daily in 2001.
