National Board of Revenue chairman Ghulam Hussain said that the
pre-shipment inspection would be abolished from July.
He said this while addressing as chief guest a pre-budget discussion at Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industries conference hall in the port city on Thursday.The NBR chairman also assured that the suggestions and recommendations placed by the business entrepreneurs of Chittagong would be given due priority in preparing the next national budget proposals.
Admitting to some administrative lapses and legal limitations while collecting revenue, the NBR chairman said that meetings between business entrepreneurs and revenue officials should be organised with regular interval across the country to bridge communications gap.
The NBR chairman also underscored the need for mutual cooperation between business entrepreneurs and revenue officials.
Ghulam assured that highest importance would be attached to the protection and promotion of local industries while preparing the budget proposals.
He also assured that rationalisation of tariff structure, reducing import tax on raw materials compared to intermediate raw materials would be given due priority
in the budget proposals.
Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Mahbubul Alam said the PSI system was introduced in the country with a view to mitigating sufferings and hassles of the importers and easing the offloading procedure.
‘But it is a matter of great regret that the business entrepreneurs are facing hassle during offloading goods’, he said.
The chamber president also demanded reduction of taxes on industrial raw materials, intermediate raw materials, capital machineries and finished goods.
The meeting was addressed by NBR officials, CCCI directors, different trade body leaders, business entrepreneurs, civil society representatives and representatives from the BGMEA, Re-Rolling Mills Owners Association, Foreign Foods Exporters Association, Shipping Agents Association and the Chittagong Tax Lawyers Association.
