Mercury dips to 6 at Ishwardi
The winter signalled it was gaining strength, as chilly winds started blowing on Wednesday, dipping the mercury to 6° Celsius in the northern town of Ishwardi, leaving
it shivering under the merciless blow of a moderate cold wave. Nearby Rajshahi, too, had its share of the bite, a little up of 7° C. It was a sudden change in
temperatures that overturned the situation at Ishwardi, from Tuesday’s 9.2°C. The reason was due to the cold jet stream coming down, released by shifting of westerly
clouds moving away from the region, that pushed the moisture-laden southerly air out, said a senior meteorologist at the Dhaka met office.
It also cleared the fog in parts of the country, including the capital Dhaka. The sun in the north, as usual, remained shrouded by haze formed by fog.
However, the sun in the afternoon over Dhaka skies brought in more cool air. The capital had a minimum temperature of 10.7°C and a maximum 22.8°C.
The met forecast that the moderate cold wave may persist over the regions of Rajshahi, Pabna, Tangail and Kushtia. Mild cold wave sweeping through the Rangpur
division and the regions of Mymensingh, Faridpur, Madaripur, Sylhet, Barisal and Jessore may spread.
However, temperature may rise from Friday, he said.
But it would short lived. The real bite of a harsher winter will start arriving from later this month, the meteorologist added.
