Notre Dame College having reputation for offering quality higher secondary education plans to set up a university to offer further education, college officials said.
The officials said that it had already collected application form from the University Grants Commission.
‘The college authorities have decided to set up a university. We have collected application form. We are now readying all required papers. Once we have all the papers, we will submit it to the commission,’ the college principal, Benjamin Costa, told New Age.
Costa said that their main aim was to make a difference in higher education.
The government has recently approved eight new private universities to run academic campuses along with the existing 54 private universities. Two of the newly approved universities are in Dhaka.
Notre Dame College has already set up a 15-member board of trustees. The board will have religious eight fathers, one brother and one sister.
The university will be housed in the Notre Dame College premises on 1.2 acres of land at Motijheel in Dhaka.
The university will be offering courses for degrees in English, philosophy, economics, sociology, business administration, computer science and textile engineering.
Costa said that they did not have any commercial purpose and the tuition fee would be reasonable so that students from middle-class families could afford. Also there will be financial supports for students from poor-income groups.
Notre Dame College is a degree college affiliated to the National University. A Christian organisation, Religious Brothers of Holy Cross, runs the college.
The college began its activities in 1949 on the campus of St Gregory’s School, Lakshmibazar, giving it the name St Gregory’s College.
In 1955, the college was relocated to its present site at Motijheel and renamed as Notre Dame College.
Even though the college offers bachelor’s courses, most students enrol with the college for higher secondary education for (Class XI to XII), taking classes in science, business studies or arts groups.
Three-year bachelor’s courses are offered leading to Bachelor of Arts (pass) or a bachelor of social sciences (pass).
