Over 7000 students were awarded graduation degrees at the 24th convocation of North South University held at the Bangabandhu Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Centre, Purbachal in the capital on Wednesday.
Education minister Dipu Moni presided over the ceremony on behalf of president Mohammed Shahabuddin, chancellor of all universities of the country.
The convocation speaker, Montek S Ahluwalia, former deputy chairman of the Planning Commission of India and a distinguished Fellow of the Centre for Social and Economic Progress, addressed the graduating students.
The event witnessed speeches from Javed Muneer Ahmad, chairman of the Board of Trustees, NSU, Junaid Kamal Ahmad, member of the Board of Trustees, and NSU vice-chancellor Atiqul Islam.
Additionally, Yasmin Kamal and Shahriar Kamal, members of the Board of Trustees, were also present.
The programme commenced with the national anthem, followed by a welcome address by ‘convocation marshal’ Shaila Joarder, associate professor, Department of Architecture.
School of Business and Economics dean Helal Ahammad, School of Humanities and Social Sciences dean Abdur Rob Khan, School of Engineering and Physical Sciences dean Javed Bari and School of Health and Life Sciences dean Hasan Mahmud Reza presented degree candidates to the minister.
After the degrees were conferred by the minister, Chancellor’s Gold Medals and Vice-Chancellor’s Gold Medals were awarded to 20 outstanding students, accompanied by their proud parents.
The valedictorian speech was delivered by Arfaa Feezanul Islam from the class of 2021.
The convocation ceremony was attended by NSU pro-vice-chancellor M Ismail Hossain, and heads of various departments, teachers, and officials.
Many guardians also joined their children to celebrate this joyous occasion.
The event was live-streamed on NSU’s Facebook page, and DBC News broadcasted it to a television audience.
