A new mother died at a private hospital in Sirajganj yesterday as the result of alleged negligence of her doctor who let two nurses perform the delivery.
Soma Saha, 32, died around 5:00am of excessive bleeding after giving birth to a baby girl around 12:30am yesterday.
She was admitted to Avesina Hospital with labour pains around 8:00pm on Friday.
Soma was in prenatal care under Shamima Aziz, a doctor of the hospital, said her husband Chandan Saha.
Although Shamima was repeatedly called and informed of Soma’s condition between 10:00pm and 11:00pm on Friday, she refused to come to the hospital. Instead, she allowed nurses to perform the delivery, he added.
Contacted, Shamima said she did not go to the hospital immediately after the first call as the patient’s condition was fine at the time of admission.
The doctor attended the patient around 2:45am as she came to know over the phone that Soma’s condition was deteriorating. She failed to check the bleeding.
Following the death, agitating relatives and locals besieged Avesina Hospital and assaulted Abu Ahmed Shahidullah, deputy civil surgeon of Sirajganj, who also works as an anaesthetist in the private hospital.
Police later brought the situation under control.
Chandan’s elder brother Pradip Saha filed a case against Shamima, the two nurses — Kaniz Fatema and Azmira Parvin — with Sirajganj Sadar Police Station for their negligence in duty.
Police initially picked up doctors Shamima Aziz and Shahidullah, nurse Kaniz Fatema, two medical assistants and a ward boy.
They later released four of them upon interrogation, Shahid Alam, officer-in-charge of the Police Station, said.
Azmira went into hiding after filing of the case. Senior judicial magistrate of Sirajganj granted bail to Shamima and Kaniz after police produced them before the court yesterday afternoon.
