The Cyber Tribunal on Wednesday rejected the bail petition of human rights organisation Odhikar’s director ASM Nasiruddin Elan and ordered him to be sent to jail.
Nasiruddin and his lawyers appeared before the tribunal in the morning and appealed for bail. In the afternoon, the judge, KM Shamsul Alam, rejected the plea and ordered that Nasiruddin be taken to jail.
Nasiruddin and Adilur Rahman Khan, the secretary of Odhikar, were accused of committing offences under the Information and Communication Technology Act 2006 (amended in 2009) on September 4 this year.
According to a press release of Odhikar, Adilur Rahman Khan was kept in Kashimpur prison for more than two months from August 13 before being released on October 11 on bail granted by the appellate division.
On September 11, warrant was issued for the arrest of Nasiruddin Elan.
On October 10, he was granted an order of ‘no arrest or harassment’ for four weeks by the High Court Division of the Supreme Court. The Cyber Tribunal’s order came when the period of the High Court order for Nasiruddin Elan has almost come to an end.
On September 5, the Detective Branch of police pressed charges against Adilur and Nasiruddin for publishing report allegedly withed doctored photos and false information about the death toll in the law enforcers’ action to flush out Hefajat-e-Islam men from Shapla Square at Motijheel in the capital in May 5-6.
Odhikar in one of its reports claimed that 61 people were killed in the police drive against Hefajat men in May 5-6.
