Renowned artist Syed Jahangir has captured his love for nature and human life through his eye-arresting paintings at a solo exhibition at Bengal Art Lounge in Gulshan 1, Dhaka.
The exhibition titled Of Man and Earth 2 displays a number of paintings of the artist done in acrylic and ink. The painter brings out rural Bangladesh in its complete richness, and as it goes with Bangladesh – rivers and boats take a major share of the exhibition.
Syed Jahangir, with his masterful strokes has captured the heart of Bangladesh and the stories of its people. Most of the works displayed in the exhibition, successfully capture and transmit the emotions of the people who are the subject matter of most of his paintings. Jahangir has portrayed mundane rural activities like husking in the field, fishing or simply a break for the farmers in the middle of the day in his works. The artist has not only been able to see the beauty in such mundane moments, but also has been successful to reproduce that beauty on his canvasses.
What seems like one of the most impressive achievements of the artist is his capability to use just the outlines of a human body and show emotions, characteristic traits or perhaps a story through them.
In his acrylic work Husking, Jahangir has given a point of view where four women are seen from behind, as they work in the field. Jahangir has beautifully captured the postures and stances, in other words the body language that rural Bangladeshi women usually demonstrate. The work shows remarkable observation and execution of the painter.
Lunch Break, another acrylic work is definitely one that can make the visitors pause and contemplate with admiration. The painting does not show the farmers, but rather just their baskets and shovels idly lying in a field of work. Jahangir has successfully personified the baskets and shovels with the human characteristics of rest and leisure.
Jahangir has demonstrated equal expertise with his ink drawings as well. ‘Waiting for a day’s work’, one of his works done in ink on paper, captures emotions like anxiety, perseverance and tinges of depression beautifully. Jahangir successfully depicts such emotions in faces that are seen from a distant point of view.
The exhibition, which began on May 31, will remain open from 12:00 to 8:00pm everyday till June 21.
