The off-beat film Uttorer Sur featuring the struggles of marginalised people won the National Film Award 2012 announced by
the Information Ministry on Thursday.
Director of the film Shahneoyaj Cacoly has won the national award in the best story writer category.
Though all the characters have been performed by unfamiliar actors, two of them also got the national awards: Lucy Gomes got the award in the best supporting role (female) category and Meghla got award in child actor category.
Produced by Impress Telefim, Uttorer Sur depicts struggles of a singer and his little daughter who sings and begs in the street to earn their living in the northern part of the country. The film stars Utpal, Lucy, Meghla, and others.
‘I am thankful to the team members of Uttorer Sur for the stunning works that brought the awards,’ said Cacoly told New Age.
‘Getting an award especially the National Film Award is really a great honour for me. It was also a surprise for me as I never thought that Uttorer Sur would do so well on National Film Award 2012,’ also said Cacoly.
‘The award will always be a great source of inspiration for me to do better and from now I will be more careful about what I make for the people,’ Cacoly added.
‘However, I will not make films only for getting awards but for the sake of making quality films, as a director is remembered by the good films he has made and not the awards he has won,’ also observed Cacoly.
Cacoly is currently busy with working for her next film Nadijon which is based on Sheikh Zahurul Haque’s story with the same title.
The film, which is also adapted by Shahneoyaj Cacoly, features the story of a boatman and presents the livelihood, the struggles and the changes in the life of poor people who live on the river banks.
The film stars Mamunur Rashid, Pran, Sharmimala, Toma Mirza, Shafiq Mona, Momena Chowdhury, Ripan, Biplob Prasad, Rifat Chowdhury, Tokai Sagor and others.
‘I have already completed the shooting and the editing on the film, and currently am busy with the film’s dubbing. I hope to release the film as soon as possible,’ told Cacoly.
The director’s other works include short films like Ujjan Panthe, Khokon Khokon Dak Pari, Golapi Panjabi, Ujanvati and
others.
