THE officers of Rajshahi University on Saturday started a two-day work abstention programme demanding rise in their retirement age to 62 from the present 60 years.
More than 700 officers, under the banner of RU Officers’ Association, refrained from joining their work from 8:00am to 10:00am on the first day. After the work abstention programme, at a gathering in front of the administrative building of the university, the association secretary, Shamim Hossain Chowdhury, declared that they would also observe work abstention today from 8:00am to 11:00am, pressing home the same demand.
He also said they called the strike as the university authorities did not meet their demand which they were making for long.
He threatened that they would go for indefinite strike on the campus if their demand was not meet soon.
‘Earlier, the university authorities assured us of fulfilling our demand but no step was taken in this regard,’ Shamim said.
RU pro-vice-chancellor Professor Chowdhury Sarowar Jahan told newsmen that the syndicate did not have the authority to decide over the demand of the employees and added that he would discuss the matter with the higher authorities.
