Spice prices except onion and ginger remained stable on both the retail and wholesale markets ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. According to the traders, the supply of spices on the market is adequate as the items have been smuggled in huge quantity from India.
Cumin, cloves, cardamom, black pepper and cinnamon were retailing at Tk 400-Tk 460 a kg, Tk 1,800 a kg, Tk 1,600 a kg, Tk 950 a kg and Tk 250-Tk 300 a kg respectively on Monday.
The price of garlic remained stable in the market and local garlic was selling at Tk 70 a kg while imported garlic was retailing at Tk 80 per kg on the day.
Mizanur Rahman, a retailer at Karwan Bazar, told New Age that the prices of almost all varieties of spice usually increased during Eid-ul-Azha for increasing demand, but this year their prices remained stable.
A large quantity of spices has been smuggled from neighbouring country ahead of Eid and also the import of the items was satisfactory and so the prices remained stable, said a trader.
The price of onion increased almost 198.25 per cent compared with that of the same period of last year, Trading Corporation of Bangladesh data showed on Monday.
The local onion was being sold at Tk 100-Tk100 a kg on Monday while the imported onion at Tk 95 a kg.
Local onion was being retailed at Tk 32 per kg and imported onion at Tk 22 per kg in the same period of the previous year.
According to the TCB data, the price of ginger increased by 73.33 per cent in a year to Tk 140 a kg.
