Local onion retails at Tk 70-75 a kg, imported one at Tk 80
The price of onion made a fresh jump in the city’s retail markets over the week ending Friday.
Traders said the stock of local onion was going to finish as its season ended and the import of the spice also decreased in recent times.
‘The price of onion decreased a bit in the previous week. But, the price of the commodity made fresh jump on both wholesale and retail markets on Friday due to a supply shortage,’ Mosharaf Hossain, proprietor of Nabarun Traders at Shambazar, told New Age.
He said that onion import from India showed a decreasing trend in recent times due to high price of the commodity in the neighbouring country and the importers could not find any suitable market alternative to that of India for importing onion.
Mosharaf said wholesale price of the imported onion increased by Tk 20 a kg and it was selling at Tk 68-Tk 70 a kilogram on Friday.
The wholesale price of local onion increased by Tk 10 a kg and it was selling at Tk 60-Tk 62 a kg on the day, he said.
On the retail market, the local onion was retailing at Tk 70-Tk 75 a kg while the imported onion was retailing at Tk 80 a kg on Friday.
Last week the prices of most of the vegetables remained high.
Aubergine was selling at Tk 50-Tk 60 a kg, okra at Tk 40 a kg, bitter gourd at Tk 60 a kg and green chilli at Tk 60 a kg on Friday.
The price of papaya decreased by Tk 10 a kg and it was selling at Tk 15 a kg on the day.
The prices of fish remained stable.
Rohita was selling at Tk 250–Tk 300 a kg on Friday from Tk 220–Tk 300 a kg a week before, pangas at Tk 180–Tk 250 a kg and tilapia at Tk 160–Tk 200 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
The price of hilsa decreased by Tk 30-Tk 50 a kg and was selling at Tk 400-Tk 450 a kg weighting about 700-800 gram.
The hilsa weighing around 1 kg was selling at Tk 550-Tk 600 a kg on Friday.
The price of broiler remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 145 a kg over the week ending Friday.
The prices of beef and mutton remained unchanged and beef was selling at Tk 280-Tk 300 a kg and mutton at Tk 450 a kg on the day.
Sugar price decreased by Tk 2 a kg and it was retailing at Tk 44-Tk 46 a kg in the city’s retail markets.
Unpacked soya bean was retailing at Tk 120 a kg and super palm oil at Tk 80 a kg over the week ending Friday.
The price of bottled soya bean oil (five litres) decreased by Tk 10 and was selling at Tk 595–Tk 610 on the day.
Red lentil, imported from Turkey and Canada, was selling at Tk 75–Tk 85 a kg.
The fine variety of red lentil called ‘kangaroo’ was selling at Tk 120 a kg while the local variety of red lentil was selling at Tk 115 a kg.
The price of egg remained unchanged and was selling at Tk 32 a hali (four pieces).
The imported garlic was selling at Tk 65 a kg while the local garlic was retailing at Tk 80 a kg.
The price of ginger decreased by Tk 20 a kg and was selling at Tk 140 a kg on the day.
The price of potato decreased by Tk 3 a kg and the item was selling at Tk 15 a kg on Friday.
Rice was being sold at the previous prices.
Fine varieties of miniket and najirshail rice were selling at Tk 46-Tk 48 a kg and Tk 52-Tk 54 a kg respectively, BR-28 at between Tk 40 and Tk 45 a kg and coarse varieties at Tk 34 a kg in the city’s retail markets on Friday.
