Radio Circle, a private online radio service, was launched Tuesday through a ceremony at the Dhaka Sheraton Hotel.
Chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on information ministry Obaidul Kader attended the ceremony as its chief guest, with science and information and communication technology secretary Abdur Rob Howlader and information commissioner professor Sadeka Halim attending as the special guests. A number of celebrities, media professionals, and government officials were also present.
The radio will broadcast a number of entertainment and educational programmes including Banglar Soor, Jana Aujana Kotha, Khichuri, International Top Chart, Circle Melodies, and Tracks Reloaded anchored by Internet jockeys including Rasel, Pushpita, Jui, Rayhan, Ovi, Saif, and Farjana, Radio Circle management said.
The launching ceremony featured an array of popular Lalon songs rendered by a group of singers hailed from the Lalon Academy of Kushtia and popular Lalon singer Rob Fakir, besides other musicians including Babu, Anu, Ramjan, Anadi Bairagi, and Shital Salauddin performing on the occasion.
Obaidul Kader said media houses should come up with quality productions and smart and neutral presentations. If they do so, it would be easy for them to be successful, he added.
He also pointed out that only 4 per cent of the country’s population has access to internet, which termed an obstruction to be overcome to establish a Digital Bangladesh.
Sadeka Halim expressed the hope that Radio Circle would not remain confined to airing musical programmes but would also speak about the independence war and broadcast programmes keeping in mind the country’s ethnic minorities.
‘Internet is a very powerful medium; we have to broadcast programmes which will introduce our culture and heritage to peoples around the globe,’ the commissioner added.
