Nineteen of the twenty on the Dhaka University unit convening committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the opposition BNP’s associate body of students, announced late Friday night, are no longer university students.
Four of them are married, one is father of a daughter, two are businessmen, and at least half a dozen have criminal records related to violence, snatching and drug peddling. Three of them were involved with Jamaat-e-Islami’s associate body of students Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Abdul Matin, who completed his studies a decade ago, has been made the committee convener and Obaidul Huq Nasir, a close aide to Chhatra Dal president Sultan Salauddin Tuku, has been made the first joint convener.
Matin got himself admitted to the university in the 1991–1992 session after his higher secondary certificate examinations in 1991. He had been involved with Islami Chhatra Shibir when he was an alim student at the Dhaka Aliya Madrassah.
‘He is an enlisted contractor and is involved in the trade of garment factory waste. He tried to win BNP nomination to contest the December 2008 general elections,’ said a senior leader of the organisation’s university unit.
Obaedul Haq is also married and busy running four shops on Elephant Road. ‘He was politically inactive during the hard days of the organisation and after the January 11, 2007 changeover he tried to migrate to the United Kingdom. He was made the first joint convener as he is a close associate of the organisation’s central committee president,’ said the insiders.
Others on the convening committee are Mohidul Hasan Hiru, Masud Pervez Khan, Abdul Wahab, Alamgir Hasan Sohan, Asaduzzaman Asad, Ahmed Saimum, Moniruzzaman Rezin, Shahanur Nargis, Ainul Haq Anik, Abdur Rahim Setu, Abul Hasan, Shah Nasiruddin Rumon, Kazi Moktar Hossain, Bayejid Arefin, Giash Uddin, ABM Nazim Mahmud, Mahfuzur Rahman Mahfuz and Golam Mostofa.
Hiru was an activist of the Awami League’s associate body of students Chhatra League and once fired into a Chhatra Dal procession in 2001.
Masud Pervez got himself admitted to the university in the 1997–98 session and earned a fame of being a perfect shooter. Abdul Wahab, who got himself admitted to the university in the 1997–98 session, is married.
Alamgir Hasan Shohan was recruited by the group which is now speaking against the new central committee.
Asaduzzaman Asad had been in jail for six moths in 2006 on charges of illegal tender activities.
Ainul Haq Anik has allegations against him of being involved in drug peddling and snatching.
Abdur Rahim Shetu got himself admitted to the university in the 1999–2000 session. He was a finance student and the university later cancelled his studentship for failing in all exams after the ones of the first year. He is now preparing for a bachelor’s degree from the National University.
Ahmed Saimum is known for his inclination towards Shibir. Moniruzzaman Rezin was expelled from Chhatra Dal over infighting in the Fazlul Haq Hall unit.
Shahanur Nargis got herself admitted to the university in the 1998–99 session. Kazi Mokter Hossain had been involved with Islami Chhatra Shibir before 2001. Shah Nasir Uddin Rumon, Bayezid Arefin, Giyash Uddin and ABM Nazim Mahmud are well known Chhatra League activists.
Abdul Matin told New Age on Saturday that it was true most of the co-conveners had completed their studies. He said they had been selected temporarily for the holding of the council session to find out new leaders for the university and hall units.
‘We will leave after the council session. The next committee will certainly have regular university students,’ he said.
