Only 12 out of the 20 former advisers of the two caretaker governments in 1996 and 2001 are available at present. As two persons including Barrister Syed Ishtiyak Ahmed and Syed Monjur Elahi acted as the advisers to both the caretaker governments in 1996 and 2001, in total 18 persons served as the advisers in these two CGs. Among these 18 six advisers including Barrister Syed Ishtiyak Ahmed, Professor Md Shamsul Haq, Segufta Bakht Chowdhury, Major Gen (retd) Abdur Rahman Khan and Major Gen (retd) Moinul Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Bimalendu Bikash Roy Chowdhury passed away.
In 1966, the then caretaker government was headed by former chief Justice Habibur Rahman as chief adviser. His advisers were Barrister Syed Ishtiyak Ahmed, professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, professor Md Shamsul Haq, Segufta Bakht Chowdhury, AZM Nasiruddin, Major Gen (retd) Abdur Rahman Khan, Dr Wahid Uddin Mahmud, Syed Monjur Elahi, Dr Nazma Chowdhury and Dr Zamilur Reza Chowdhury. BNP led by Khaleda Zia came to power in the 1996 elections which followed the overthrow nine-year military rule of general Hussain Mohammad Ershad.
On the other hand, former Chief Justice Latifur Rahman was the chief adviser of the caretaker government in 2001. The other advisers were Barrister Syed Ishtiyak Ahmed, justice Bimolendu Bikash Roy Chowdhury, ASM Shahjahan, Syed Monjur Elahi, Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury, AKM Amanul Islam Chowdhury, M Hafiz Uddin Khan, Brigadier (retd) Professor Abdul Malek, Major Gen (retd) Moinul Hossain Chowdhury and Rokeya Afzal Rahman.
AL, led by Sheikh Hasina, swept to power in the 2001 elections under chief justice Latifur Rahman.
